We prefer the phrase "Triple Zero" over "Triple Oh" because of potential confusion when using alphanumeric keypads which could cause people to incorrectly dial "666" in an emergency, not Triple Zero (000).

Competency-based Assessments

Learner Guide Assessments

  • Self paced completion of Learner Guide Assessment Activities to be completed during the ‘off’ shift training.
  • Activities will be reviewed by a Workplace Trainer upon completion.

Theory Assessments

  • Closed book written examinations based on the theory component of the course.
  • Undertaken during the ‘off’ shift training.
  • Successful completion requires a pass mark of either 80% (Victoria Police/State Emergency Services) or 90% (all other ESO groups).
  • Where a trainee does not meet the specified level, they will be provided with the opportunity to undertake the assessment (or relevant parts of the assessment as defined by the assessor) again.
  • Successful completion is required prior to moving into the on-the-job phase of training.

Practical/Scenario Assessments

  • Scenario based assessments simulating the live operational environment.
  • Undertaken during the ‘off’ shift training.
  • Successful completion requires the trainee to demonstrate the required practical application of Standard Operating Procedures, Workflows and the applicable agency specific programs.
  • Areas of deficiency determined by the Workplace Assessor will be addressed with further training and assessment.
  • Successful completion is required prior to moving into the on-the-job phase of training.

On-The-Job Assessments

  • An assessment of the trainees’ performance in the live operational environment.
  • Undertaken during the ‘on’ shift training.
  • Successful completion requires the trainee to demonstrate the required practical application of Standard Operating Procedures, Workflows and the applicable agency specific programs.
  • Areas of deficiency determined by the Workplace Assessor will be addressed with further training and assessment.
  • On successful completion of the on-the-job Assessment the trainee will be issued with the relevant course Certificate.
  • Flexible delivery of the assessments can be arranged where the trainee requires an alternative method of delivery due to language, literacy or numeracy issues, or any other relevant factor that may hinder the assessment process.
  • All Assessments carried out at ESTA will be conducted by staff who have successfully completed the assessment subjects from the Training and Assessment Training Package (TAA04) or hold equivalent competencies from the Certificate IV Assessment and Workplace Training.
